Gazette's Hero
of the Month for April 1998
This month's award goes to Malcolm Walker,
founder and CEO of Britain's Iceland supermarket chain. Walker
told British radio this week that Iceland will break ranks with
the nation's supermarkets by refusing to allow genetically
altered foods imported from the U.S. to be sold under Iceland's
store brand.
Walker said: "Consumers are being conned." The use
of genetically modified ingredients, he said, "is probably
the most significant and potentially dangerous development in
food production this century."
It takes courage to go against the current. We salute Mr. Walker.
